Acquiring an Apprenticeship Part 1

On-the-job training is a critical part of your learning and one of the most rewarding aspects of apprenticeship. Finding an employer who is willing to mentor and sponsor you will be one of the biggest challenges you face, but there are steps you can take to increase your chances of landing and keeping a job.

STEP 1: FIND OUT WHO’S HIRING
These organizations can help you find a employer sponsor:

WorkBC Centre at Hecate Strait Employment Development Society, located behind the Court House at 125 Market Place, has a daily updated job board and can also help with your resume or the interview process. You can also call for an appointment with a an employment counsellor at (250) 624-9498.

WorkBC’s Apprenticeship Job Match will help you to find companies that are looking for apprentices in your trade.

WorkBC’s online Job Board is also a good place to find employment in your trade.


STEP

STEP program, created by the BC Construction Association, will help you with your resume, interview, connect with employers, offers mentoring, assistance with ITA registration, financial help for tools and work clothing and more. Call (250) 624-6881 to make an appointment or visit their office at #2 – 437 3rd Avenue West.

The ITA’s Apprenticeship Advisors serve as an extension of the ITA Customer Support team, with the primary responsibility of providing regional support to apprentices and sponsors, creating a positive impact on continuation and completion rates for apprentices in local communities. They are great resources and can help you in your search of a sponsor in different ways.
